In case you aren't familiar with the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby case (the Hobby Lobby case is totally not
new) , allow me to provide a very brief summary with limited detail. Basically, as of June 30, 2014, in the
Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling, it was decided that "requiring family-owned corporations to pay for insurance
coverage for contraception under the Affordable Care Act violated a federal
law protecting religious freedom" Adam Liptak, Supreme Court Rejects Contraceptive Mandate for
Some Corporations Justices Rule in Favor of Hobby Lobby, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/7/01/us/hobby-
lobby-case-supreme-court-contraception.html). So, really, in the boxing ring, we have morals (that are
different for different people), limitations, the Affordable Care Act, business collision, power over people,
and a Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Tensions rise (even more) after learning that companies will still
offer health care for vasectomies and Viagra.
HUH?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although this case and issue is not new, it still possesses the ability to ignite various
emotions and responses as if it is. It can be perceived as a battle of practicing religious freedoms and rights, but the battle with control over women, women's rights and their freedoms, power, and opinions are present as well...and it's blatantly obvious. Not only are our practices, beliefs, and opinions about what it "right" and "wrong" different among us all, but opinions about women, our "appropriate" and "inappropriate" decisions, and actions vary as well. Why people are so focused on controlling or judging someone else's decisions under certain subjects when we all have to answer for our own choices as believers or not???? I have no clue...BUT, I posted an inquiry relating to the Hobby Lobby case on one of my social network pages, remained silent, and allowed people to share their opinions. Check them out:
MY QUESTION (JUNE 30, 2014):
"I would like to know how you feel about businesses/places of employment regulating portions of medical care. How do you feel about the Hobby Lobby ruling? Upset? Disappointed? Torn? Think it's fair? Don't care at all? "
VARIOUS ANSWERS FROM NETWORK FRIENDS:
"To me a decision about birth control should be left to a woman & spouse and her physician...but that's just me tho..."- Noah S.
"Yes, This is a tough one but in my personal opinion healthcare coverage or supplies should not be limited. I'm with Obama that organizations should not make that choice for women. They should be able to make their own decision. That's like me going into business for myself and I feel like unwed mothers shouldn't receive coverage because its against my religion. Even though its against my religion I can't limit the healthcare to these mothers and stopping them from getting proper care for their unborn babies. A organization is supposed to look out for their employees no matter what religion the company represents. That's just my opinion".- Nikia R.
"I believe these decisions have more to do with political quarrels than anything. However, I'm Pro-Life so I'm typically against birth control, which would make me biased. This is simply a protest to and/or loop hole to the new health care laws. However, it's tough to take a stance without the particulars".- Despo Nation
I will write up my input for u. I am strongly against the ruling but for simple and good reasons.- Ashley H.Totally against the ruling. So many reasons. Very upset about the precedent for future cases that this sets.- Bridget J.
"My opinion on ruling is as follows: WTF???????????? THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I, AND EVERY OTHER WOMAN ON THIS PLANET, DESERVE TO BE COVERED AND GIVEN ACCESS AND THE RIGHT TO HAVE CONTROL OVER MY OWN BODY!!!! OH BUT I AM SURE THAT FUCKING VASECTOMIES AND VIAGRA WILL BE COVERED!!!!!!!!! FUCK THIS DAMN SEXIST PATRIARCHAL SOCIETY!!!! ONE DAY WOMEN AND ALL THE PROGRESSIVE MEN WILL GET FED UP PAST THEIR LIMIT AND YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!!!!!! WE DESERVE EQUAL PAY, EQUAL COVERAGE, EQUAL OPPORTUNITY REGARDLESS OF SEX, GENDER, RELIGION!!!!!! WHY IS IT SO HARD TO CONCEIVE THE NOTION OF THE REALITY THAT WE ARE ALL EQUAL HUMAN BEINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????". Dominique B.
" I think it's bull crap and I believe this is just a way for them to hide behind "religious beliefs" for many reasons. I believe it's because politics, money, and a form of "enforcing their power" under those so called beliefs.I believe that their insurance still covers vasectomies right? Smh"-Jessica D.
" RFRA bipartisan already dealt with this".- Sandra S.
I just wanted to share them without my input because...well...sometimes, other opinions and emotions are needed, and regardless of my opinion, I respected theirs. Our opinions may vary, but, think about it...all of it.Is it possible to please everyone in reference to equality? Was control over a groups of individuals the main focus? Was this to stand against Obamacare? Should businesses regulate which aspects medical care pays for? What about various religion practices? Just random thoughts...
With Realness,
