So, we all ( I mean we ALL) know 90's cartoons were the BEST of the best cartoons ever created- even with the subliminal messages and questionable actions between some of the characters in the shows...like Ren and Stimpy. ANYWAY, I was watching "Rugrats" the other night, and I was just enjoying the heck out of it. Seeing Tommy break out and lead the way, Phil and Lil dig in their belly buttons (don't front like you never checked yours), Angelica (who probably now has a health issue with her sugar) selfishly boss the children around while carrying (an obviously abused-yet appreciated- and in need of a lace-front...or hair-cut) Cynthia, Susie CarMichael keeping the peace, Chuckie searching for peace, and Spike! Just hearing the intro song pretty much put me in a good mood. As I was watching Tommy take his little screw driver, unlock the fence, and lead the gang out to take on their mission of the day, I started thinking, "Where was CPS???" I mean, DANG!!! Is there an episode where the children didn't break out? Grandpa Lou was usually the care taker and he was usually far too gone in a nap (in one episode he had a date with one of his hunnies though...mmhmm), and they STILL left the kids with him. Angelica's parents were far too occupied in the work field (and felt the stress of their child) and weren't the greatest at balancing time spent with their daughter, so they compensated their absences with gifts. SN: We never knew what Angelica's Mom was drinking in that fancy little mug either! I'm not making assumptions though. She was out there handling business and working her way to the top, but some of the parents had some issues. I'm pretty sure Stu suffered from seasonal depression too.
Back to CPS...I'm surprised Chuckie's dad or his Step-mom (in the later episodes) didn't call CPS on the Pickles, but they were probably too scared. Looks like Grandpa Lou and Drew may have had some hands on them...definitely not Stu though. Didi rode Dr. Lipschitz to the moon and back, and you think he would have helped her get some control, but naahh. He was such an unreliable doctor! I think he had a crush on Didi...hmm. Matter of fact, there were other kids on the show that that needed CPS involvement as well, but they kept CPS on the low...so we could dream. So we could think that we were as crafty as Tommy, that those cookies tasted as good as they looked, and that we'd be able to experience the adventures they did...until reality hits. We thought nothing of CPS as kids. But now, I'm grown, wearing glasses like Didi (except in black), STILL wanting those cookies, and wishing I had the adventures now that the Rugrats had then. I'm not even mad they dodged CPS; I'm mad I couldn't break out of the gate like Tommy.
